More than 500 young members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County filled the Lee Wetherington BGC Gymnasium as my wife and I presented a total of $5,000 in college scholarships— $1,000 each to five outstanding Club members bound for college. As long-time supporters of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County, my family has provided a total of $65,000 for scholarships in the last 13 years.
The Dick Vitale Scholarship recipients were chosen by BGCSC staff for outstanding leadership qualities. Their names, college choices, and Club affiliation follow:
Roy McBean Club
Danesha Hunter, graduated Booker High School andwill be attending Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL,where she will major in Sociology. Danesha has been a member of the Roy McBean Boys & Girls Club for fouryears.
Lee Wetherington Club
Alexi Montero, graduated Booker High School and will be attending Johnson & Wales University in Miami, FL,where he will major in Culinary Arts/ Business. Alexi has been a member of the Lee Wetherington Club for the last 13 years.
Gene Matthews Club
Sofia Gilot, graduated North Port High School and will be attending the Indian River College in Fort Pierce, FL,where she will major in nursing. Sofia has been a member of the Gene Matthews Club for the past fiveyears.
Guy Guenther, graduated North Port High School andwill be attending the University of West Florida in Pensacola, FL, where he will major in political science. Guy has been a member of the Gene Matthews Club for the past 10 years.
Robert and Joan Lee Club
Melinda Hasbrouck, graduated Venice High School andwill be attending the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL, where she sill major in psychology and minor in business. Melinda has been a member of the Robert and Joan Lee Club for the past two years.
The kids at the Boys & Girls Clubs work hard to be champions, and I’m happy to have the opportunity to work with them and to help them continue on this path to success.
